Akagera National park

Spanning over 1,000 square kilometers, Akagera National Park is a breathtaking expanse of savannah, woodland, and wetlands, and Rwanda’s only Big Five reserve. Here, wildlife enthusiasts can encounter lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo in their natural habitats, along with zebras, giraffes and more. One of Akagera’s most notable conservation success stories is the reintroduction of the critically endangered black rhino, along with the resurgence of lions, which had been absent from the park for over two decades.

Akagera’s lakes and wetlands, including Lake Ihema, are a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 species of birds, such as the rare shoebill stork. Visitors can enjoy game drives, boat safaris, and even night drives for a thrilling look at nocturnal wildlife. The park’s commitment to sustainable tourism ensures an eco-friendly experience while supporting local communities. Akagera’s dramatic landscapes coupled with its thriving wildlife and conservation efforts make it a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic African safari experience.

Set in the idyllic surroundings of Akagera National Park, Magashi is a luxurious tented camp overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Rwanyakazinga. Each tastefully appointed tent features comfortable king-size or twin beds, writing desk with tablet for guest use, and a refreshment station as well as en-suite bathroom with separate rainfall shower. The open-plan lounge and dining area in the centre of the camp are beautifully designed using natural materials and traditional Rwandan ‘imigongo’ murals, with the circular bar taking centre stage. Guests can mingle at the open seating areas and enjoy the library. A small swimming pool with sun loungers and a viewing deck with convivial fire pit are the perfect way to relax after your days on the savannah, where you’ll marvel at lions, rhinos, buffalos and elephants.

Volcanoes National Park

One of Africa’s most iconic wildlife sanctuaries, Volcanoes National Park is best known for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. Spanning a lush, mountainous region, the park is located in the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanic peaks that stretch across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park’s mist-covered forests are home to more than just gorillas; visitors can also encounter golden monkeys, rare birds, and a variety of other wildlife that thrive in this unique ecosystem.

The park offers one of the most sought-after wildlife experiences in the world: the chance to come face-to-face with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Trekkers are guided by experienced rangers who provide insights into the behavior and conservation of these majestic creatures. Beyond gorilla trekking, visitors can hike to the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey or explore the park’s volcanic peaks, including Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. Volcanoes National Park is a symbol of Rwanda’s commitment to conservation, offering a deeply immersive experience.

Set on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Singita Kwitonda Lodge is designed to honour its dramatic setting. The luxury lodge includes elements such as woven ceilings and hand-fired terracotta brickwork crafted by local artisans, while a dedicated Conservation Room and on-site nursery and vegetable garden – which provides fresh produce for Kwitonda’s farm-to-table food journey – further enhances the guest experience. Each of the eight luxurious suites features a private heated plunge pool, wellness treatment area, in- and outdoor fireplaces, and large timber-framed windows that highlight the breathtaking scenery and volcano views.
