Hawaii Itinerary: Kauai Hiking & Beach Adventure

This itinerary is designed for travellers who want the full Kauai experience — the kind that goes far beyond a resort stay. From the panoramic grandeur of Waimea Canyon to two secret waterfalls on a private rappelling estate, a helicopter flight over the island’s most cinematic valleys, and a jungle hike through towering rainbow eucalyptus forests. All of it anchored by seven nights at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay — a world-class luxury resort perched above the crescent of Hanalei Bay on Kauai’s celebrated North Shore.

As with all GHardy Tours itineraries, every element can be tailored to your interests, pace, and travel style — including the addition of golf, surf lessons, or other activities built around your energy on arrival.

The Garden Island, At Its Most Extraordinary

Dubbed the Garden Island for its impossibly lush vegetation, Kauai is the most northwestern of Hawaii’s major islands — and arguably its most dramatic. Emerald valleys, sharp mountain spires, and jagged cliffs carved by centuries of rainfall define a landscape unlike anything else on earth. Some parts of Kauai are accessible only by sea or air, revealing views beyond imagination. Its laid-back atmosphere and rich local culture, set against a canvas of cascading waterfalls and forking rivers, make it truly timeless.

Kauai is Hawaii's oldest island, approximately 5.1 million years old!

Arrive in Kauai

Arrival in Kauai

Fly into Kauai and collect your rental car. The drive to 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay takes approximately one hour — a scenic introduction to the island’s verdant interior and dramatic coastal views. Check in, settle into your suite, and take in your first views over the sweeping crescent of Hanalei Bay.

This evening, dinner is at the hotel — a gentle first taste of the resort’s celebrated farm-to-table cuisine and the perfect start to your week ahead.

Spa Morning & Waterfall Rappelling

A day that perfectly captures the range of Kauai — begin in serenity at the Bamford Wellness Spa, where a curated treatment menu draws on the island’s natural botanicals and the ethos of slow, intentional luxury.

The afternoon shifts to adventure: waterfall rappelling on a private estate above the Hule’ia watershed and Ha’upu Mountain range, home to two completely secret waterfalls inaccessible to the public. Following a thorough safety briefing and practice run, the descent begins with the cascading 30-foot Bamboo Falls before the main event — the towering 60-foot Papakolea Falls. Snacks, water, and juice are provided throughout. Guaranteed to be one of the most memorable experiences of your Kauai stay.

Any time remaining is yours to enjoy the resort’s beach, pools, and the charming town of Hanalei just moments away.

Waimea Canyon — The Grand Canyon of the Pacific

A full day dedicated to one of Hawaii’s most extraordinary natural wonders. Waimea Canyon stretches 14 miles long, one mile wide, and more than 3,600 feet deep — a geological spectacle with no equal in the Pacific. Your private guide leads you along a secluded trail with panoramic views of crested buttes, rugged crags, deep valley gorges, and grand inland vistas that go on for miles.

The day lasts approximately nine hours including transfers, with four to five hours of actual hiking. A lodge along the trail provides a welcome stop for a relaxed lunch at your own pace.

Jurassic Park Helicopter Adventure

Take to the skies over Kauai’s most remote and cinematic landscapes. This helicopter tour visits the breathtaking locations used to film Jurassic Park — including a walk through the jungle path to the base of Manawaiopuna Falls, one of Hawaii’s most dramatic waterfalls, accessible only by air. Discover the native plants, remarkable geologic formations, and the agricultural history of a part of the island that remains virtually untouched.

Lydgate Farms Chocolate Tour & Free Days on the North Shore

One of Kauai’s most celebrated agricultural experiences awaits at Lydgate Farms — recognized three times as producing the world’s finest cacao beans by Cocoa of Excellence in Paris, France. The Lydgate family are pioneers of cacao farming on the island. Walk the historic estate, learn the full journey from bean to bar, and taste the extraordinary results for yourself.

The remaining time across these two days is entirely your own. Spend an afternoon on the beach at Hanalei Bay, browse the boutiques and cafés of Hanalei town, try a surf lesson or kayak rental, play a round at one of Kauai’s celebrated golf courses, or simply settle into the unhurried rhythm of the North Shore. This is Kauai on your own terms.

Kuilau Ridge Jungle Trail & Rainbow Eucalyptus Grove

A beautiful final full day in Kauai’s lush interior. The journey begins with a stop at the ‘Ōpaeka’a Falls roadside overlook before heading deeper into the island’s verdant heart. The Kuilau Ridge Trail is an easy-to-moderate two-to-three-hour hike along a well-maintained path through towering Sydney blue gum trees, wild orchids, brilliant ‘ōhi’a lehua blossoms, and the hala tree — long used by native Hawaiians for weaving hats, baskets, and voyaging canoe sails.

As the trail climbs, sweeping views emerge across Kahili Mountain, Wai’ale’ale Mountain, Mount Kawi, and the Makaleha Mountains — a panorama that puts Kauai’s extraordinary geography into full perspective. At the turnaround point, a covered picnic area offers a quiet moment to take it all in.

Back at the arboretum, a short stroll through a grove of rainbow eucalyptus trees — their bark a vivid patchwork of green, blue, purple, and orange — provides one of Kauai’s most extraordinary natural spectacles. Time and conditions permitting, a refreshing dip in a nearby mountain stream makes for a perfect final afternoon on the island.
