Itinerary

Arrive in Lisbon

Lisbon

Lisbon is where culinary traditions from across Portugal come together, providing inspiration for a talented generation of creative chefs and up-and-coming restauranteurs. The city boasts a culinary culture of its own, along with a long list of Michelin-starred restaurants and charming local eateries to explore. Experience the single tasting menu “Belcanto” at the restaurant of the same name, boasting two Michelin stars, where chef José Avillez takes guests on a journey of gastronomic discovery influenced by Lisbon’s maritime shoreline and its distinct districts: in the words of this celebrated chef, “cooking is our very own fado, and our own form of expression”. Delight in communal dining with fellow foodies on a trip to the Time Out Market, where you’ll find some of the city’s finest food purveyors and culinary artisans under one roof.

And, no trip to Lisbon is complete without a coffee and Pastel de Nata at the birthplace of this famous dessert – the Pasteis de Belém bakery next to the Jerónimos Monastery, where these traditional custard tarts have been prepared for 300 years.

Suggested Accommodation: Hotel da Baixa

Douro Valley

Known for centuries for its fortified Port wines, the Douro today produces a wide variety of wine styles. The vineyards of this breathtaking valley are themselves feats of engineering, built along steep mountain terraces constructed as early as the 17th century to hold soil and rainwater to nourish the vines, along with olive, almond and oak trees. The mountainous landscape lined with picturesque vineyards has earned the Douro UNESCO World Heritage status and made it one of the world’s most emblematic destinations for vinophiles, producing wines of unequalled complexity and richness.

Portugal itself boasts an astounding number of indigenous grape varieties; in the Douro, noteworthy red varieties include Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional and Tinto Cão whereas predominant white varieties are Malvasia Fina and Viosinho. Discover Douro and Port wines paired with local specialties in the quintas (estates), famous for their hospitality. Enjoy guided tastings at historic estates such as Quinta das Carvalhas, whose century-old vines produce wines brimming with character and elegance. The region also has much to offer to all those seeking relaxation, history, heritage or culture.
