There’s a version of yacht travel most people never experience — not a cruise ship, not a day charter, but a fully crewed private yacht designed entirely around you. No fixed itinerary, no other passengers, no compromise. Just open water, extraordinary coastlines, and a team dedicated to making every moment exceptional. Here’s how to plan it properly.

Crewed Charter vs. Bareboat
Know the Difference

Most luxury travelers opt for a fully crewed charter — a private yacht with captain, crew, and chef included. A bareboat charter means you sail it yourself. For the traveler who wants to arrive at a hidden cove with a glass of wine already waiting rather than managing sails and navigation charts, crewed is almost always the right answer. The crew handles everything; you simply enjoy the journey.

Choosing Your Destination:

The destination shapes everything: the yacht type, the season, the pace.

Here are three that consistently deliver for our clients:

The Greek Islands

The Cyclades remain the gold standard for Mediterranean yacht charter travel. Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos each offer something distinct, and the island sequences you can create by private yacht are simply unavailable any other way — anchoring off uninhabited beaches, slipping into fishing villages before the day-trippers arrive, watching the Santorini sunset from the water rather than a crowded caldera terrace. A catamaran charter through the Greek islands typically runs 7–10 days and pairs beautifully with a few nights in Athens at either end.

The Amalfi Coast & Sicily

Italy’s coastline rewards those who approach it from the water. Positano looks entirely different from a sundeck at anchor. The sea caves of Capri are best explored by tender from a private yacht. Sicily’s lesser-known coves are largely inaccessible by land. A private motor yacht along the Amalfi Coast is one of the most consistently spectacular experiences we design — and combining it with a few days in Sicily adds a layer of cultural depth that few itineraries can match.

The French Riviera

Antibes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco, Corsica — the French Riviera by private yacht is the definitive summer luxury experience. The coastline is spectacular from the water in a way that’s simply not replicable on land, and the ability to move between ports without traffic or ferry schedules changes the experience entirely. High season runs June through August; book 9–12 months in advance for the best vessels.

What to Look for in a Yacht

Size, layout, and crew matter more than most people realize before their first charter. A few things worth understanding:

Catamaran vs. monohull

Catamarans offer more deck space, greater stability, and larger living areas. They’re ideal for families or groups who want space to spread out. Monohulls are more traditional, with a closer connection to the sailing experience, and are often preferred by those who want the yacht to feel like a yacht.

Motor yacht vs. sailing yacht

Motor yachts cover significantly more distance each day, making them better suited to destination-focused itineraries where you want to see a lot of coastline. Sailing yachts are for those who want the journey itself to be the experience — slower, quieter, and more connected to the water.

Crew size and specialization

A typical crewed luxury charter includes a captain, first mate, and chef at minimum. Larger vessels add stewards, dive instructors, and in some cases spa therapists. The chef is often the most underappreciated member of the crew — a great yacht chef transforms the experience entirely.

How Long Should a Yacht Charter Be?

Seven days is the industry standard and a sensible starting point. Fewer than five days and you spend too much of it finding your rhythm. Ten to fourteen days opens up more ambitious routes — full Cyclades loops, coast-to-coast Italy, or combining the Greek Islands with the Turkish coast. For first-time charterers we typically recommend seven days in a focused area rather than trying to cover too much ground. The temptation to pack in destinations is understandable, but the best yacht vacations leave room to linger.

The Best Time of Year to Yacht

Timing matters enormously in yacht travel, and the right window varies by destination.

Greek Islands

May, June, and September are ideal. July and August bring higher traffic in popular anchorages and the Meltemi wind in the Cyclades, which can be strong enough to disrupt planned itineraries. September is arguably the finest month — warm water, lighter crowds, and golden light.

Amalfi Coast & Sicily

June through September, with June being the sweet spot before peak season fully arrives. The water is warm, the ports are manageable, and the light in the early evenings is extraordinary.

French Riviera

July and August are peak season, with prices and crowds to match. June and September offer better vessel availability, nearly identical weather, and a coastline that feels genuinely yours rather than shared with half of Europe.

Meet Our Yacht Travel Designers

Booking a private yacht charter independently is possible — but the variables are considerable. Vessel quality varies enormously within the same price bracket, and photographs rarely tell the full story. Crew references matter. Itinerary design requires genuine local knowledge of anchorages, weather patterns, port access, and the kind of insider detail that only comes from experience.

A travel designer with established charter relationships can access vessels that aren’t publicly listed, negotiate terms on your behalf, and brief the crew on your preferences, dietary requirements, and pace before you board. The difference between a good charter and a truly extraordinary one is almost always in the planning — and in knowing which questions to ask before you commit.
