The city’s stunning coastline includes Copacabana, once a quiet fishing village, now the world’s most famous beach. Viewing Rio from both mountaintop and water offer ideal vantage points to see how the city’s dramatic topography has sculpted its layout, and to appreciate the striking contrast of natural beauty and urban development, poverty and wealth.
Activities:
- Experience beach culture like a true Carioca cruising the waterfront bike path connecting legendary beaches from Copacabana to Ipanema.
- Meet Rio’s most famous resident, Christ the Redeemer, a colossal symbol of Brazilian welcome that doubles as the perfect vantage point to understand how Rio’s stunning landscape shaped its urban story.
- Learn the basics of Capoeira, developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil to disguise martial arts as dance.
- Discover Rio’s most charming neighborhoods on foot, from bohemian Santa Teresa and its mansion-turned-gallery at Ruins Park, down the colorful Selarón Steps to lively Lapa and Cinelândia, passing through South America’s oldest public park along the way.

Foz du Iguaçu

Tango, created in the working-class port neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Uruguay, spills from cafes beside leafy plazas, and the rich scent of grilling beef drifts from traditional parrillas.
